New Media by Ayesha Azam

With so many technological advancements occurring I believe a new type of new media that I would like to see would be holographic calls. We have the ability to face time/video chat, send videos to one another but holographic calls I believe would be the next best thing. Being able to not only send a video of your self to someone, but to send it in a 360 angle where it appears to seem that you are directly in front of the person on the other end, in REAL TIME I believe would be a success. Key words being 360 degree angle and real time, there isn't something like this on the market yet. We've seen it in movies but to have the ability to use it with the device on our hands would make a mark on the history of technology.

I haven't added content to the wiki page but as I have continued to look through the page, I have decided to make some contributions on healthcare and how the importance of it has been uprising in recent times and what it can possibly mean for the future, whether its economically or ethically. With all the recent buzz over healthcare on the news I believe its an important topic to discuss and look further into.

File Sharing is the transporting of files from one designated computer, to another one with the use of internet. It gives us the ability to download documents and share it amongst whom ever. P2P is basically the same thing as file sharing but for digital content such as movies, videos, etc. An example of P2P would be the illegal downloading of movies. This can lead to massive losses in the movie industry due to the pirating issues. In order to improve Baruch with New media, I would suggest having an online chat on the Baruch website where students can reach out to staff and ask questions about registrations, billing, SACC workshops, FAFSA, and etc. This can eliminate the dragging phone calls where it takes about 20-30 minutes to get someone on the line to answer a question that only took 1 minute to answer. This can save much time for both parties (student and staff) and it can also help reach more students at a faster pace. Being someone who experienced this and know many others as well who had the same bad experience, I believe this would be an efficient way to use new media.

As years go by, the use of social media has been increasing, and along side so has technological advancements. These advancements have been used to help aid in our privacy online, but thanks to these advancements the level of risk our privacy faces is also escalating. In the article "The Wild West of Privacy", the author mentions how data is collected by these online companies, and then sold to external companies who use this data to figure out what our interests are, (personal to non-personal)which can put a person in danger. Hackers can access this information and steal credit card info, identity theft, and so on. Although some social media accounts do offer the choice of making your account private or public, nothing is every really private therefore, confidentiality is never guaranteed. New Media has been a great source in fostering creativity in so many ways. In the article "Creators, Audiences, and New Media: Creativity in an Interactive Environment", it states how new media offers ways in studying creativity and audiences. Users from all around the world have the ability to share their thoughts, whether its words, art, photography, it all comes into the same use and its giving people a voice. Without New Media, people wouldn't have the chance to interact with others, or find new interests, or share their thoughts. Virtual Worlds can have many different ways in which it can be used whether its with video games, training within the medical and military field, or even testing out prototypes. With all these new technological advancements, almost any thing is possible virtually. Think of it as a "test run" before the real thing for some, where as it can also be used as "another life" where users can use their imagination to create a world for them selves. An example of a pro towards a Virtual World is how it "mimics" the real world. This can be great strategy for the medical field as well as the military field. Doctors and nurses can take advantage of how much of a realistic path that a Virtual World can offer and use it to train themselves with different treatments and so forth. Although Twitter is more of a modern take compared to blackboard discussions, I believe it is kind of inconvenient due to the letter limit resulting in us not being able to fully express how we feel. Twitter is a great way to talk about things fairly quickly but at the end of the day, having a full on discussion is much harder. In my opinion Blackboard discussions are also easily to go through. With Twitter, we have to look though replies, who @ us and sometimes it gets confusing when you see a bunch of new tweets that aren't even in order. Where as on blackboard, if someone was providing you feedback on your comment, it appears right below, which is much easier to sort through.

The 4 different social networking sites I visited were Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and Youtube. When visiting these 4 sites, I realized they are all similar in way in which users use the platform to express how they feel, share their inputs on different topics whether its political, or about anything that has to do with lifestyles. The differences I did see within the sites was that for example on Twitter, I see people sharing more comical thoughts and pictures, and its all about starting a trending tweet. Instagram is more of the app where people are sharing photos of them selves with friends and so forth where as Facebook is more use of a connection where families are connecting with each other and Youtube is used by bloggers sharing different tips and tricks about everyday life. Although they all have the same purpose to help connect people from all around, they did have a different target audience.

Blogs can be used for many different reasons whether its to promote products, or just for social interaction. Internet as a whole has been a definite factor in all social networking and users range from middle school kids online video games to companies using it to their advantage.Corporate companies actually like to use blogs for promotion of their companies or products they sell. They can get influencers who have a massive following, to create posts dedicated to that corporation where it can attract new customers. The benefits that this can have to society are numerous but one example would be in the article "In India, Using Facebook to Catch Scofflaw Drivers", it mentions how the traffic police had started a facebook page where near by residents would post pictures of drivers who were not following the laws when it came to driving.  The differences between a Blog vs a Wiki is how users approach the way of using them. For instance, in a blog, users cans write a post about a certain topic and other users can contribute to the post and develop it more with their own opinions is more of a free write, so users feel they have more control over what they say, where as in a wiki, it is more of a collaborative approach between people where they can add, develop, and edit content but in a more professional manner. For example, companies use Wikis in order to transmit information which was stated in the article "How To Use Wiki for Business" and they way a blog was used in "Brooklyn Blog Helps Lead to Drug Raid", which was a neighborhood blog where neighbors within the area were able to make posts about that topic.       The topic I chose to write my analysis is on : "Instagram: Reality vs Fantasy". As years go by, technology is evolving and so is our usage over them. I've specifically chosen the social media app Instagram because it has been one of the most used apps in recent years but not only that, it's also a form of media that has been very questionable as well when it comes to distinguishing what's reality and what's fantasy. There are many positive effects from this app which have impacted peoples daily lives, where as there have also been an uprise in negative effects in peoples lives, mental health and so on.
